Compact and Pocket bibles can be great witnessing tools. Most are inexpensive enough that you can afford to just give them away if the situation calls for it.
Remember the Lords words :
Isaiah 55:11
So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.
I’ve found it extremely helpful to place a Bible on the desk at work. It can be a great comfort on those days things aren’t going well. Aside from that when others come by the desk and see it there they know you are a Christian. Just by nature they are then a little more polite and a little less demanding. The language around you tends to get a little cleaner so it helps you avoid uncomfortable situations. I have actually had a manager apologize to me for another manager’s language, all without me making a complaint or saying anything about it. At times, it can also be a conversation starter. Particularly with those who are Christians or those who are looking for something. The conversation may start out with the question “What church do you go to?”.
I usually like to keep a compact bible in the car for just this sort of thing. It’s just a little more noticeable then a vest pocket bible and yet it’s still not a big book. I also like to always keep a vest pocket bible in my pocket. You just never know when opportunity may present itself. I got used to doing that when I was active with the Gideons. They had what they called personal workers testaments we would buy and keep on us. Most of the time I wind up giving these away. Maybe to a panhandler instead of money. Or maybe I would just accidentally leave it on someone’s desk or in their car if I think they could use some good news.
I have even found it helpful in business situations. For example, maybe you are having a business lunch with someone you’ve never met before. If you reach for your checkbook and pull out a vest pocket bible from your suit pocket with the checkbook, or you open up your notebook and the first thing on top is a small bible. I am always amazed at how that really seems to break the ice and makes others comfortable. Many are Christians who seem reluctant to talk about it in business situations. Until they find out you’re a Christian. Whether they are a Christian or not their defenses seem to disappear. Their guard is lowered.
Don’t misunderstand me. I’m not one who wants to use the Word for my own benefit. But it does always benefit me as well as the other party when we can deal with each other on an honest and open basis. These are just ways I have found to inform others about my faith without getting on a soap box or making someone feel uncomfortable. It has also served as a good way to get them to open up about their faith.
It is always a good thing to be armed with the Word. Simply having a copy of the Word with you seems to open up doors to witness to others.
